FOUST Newsletter

from the president...

Dear Alum, Friend, Parent, or anyone else who might have ended up on our email list,

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Friends of the UCLA Sailing Team newsletter! First off, I want to thank everyone who turned out for the alumni regatta this spring. We got some excellent fleet and team racing in, raised some money for the team, and everyone had a great time. And perhaps most importantly, we got the alumni together for the first time in far too long.

For our first issue, we have a letter from the team Captains and the racing schedule for year to come. We are also excited to announce the release of our website: www.foustsupport.net . One exciting new feature that I'm sure you've all been waiting for is online dues payment , so if you haven't paid your $25 in annual dues yet please check that out.

Coming up, the Stoney Burke regatta is October 10 and 11 at Treasure Island. For all of you in the Bay Area, this would be a great chance to show up and meet some of the new recruits this year. I wont be able to make it to this one, but if you're interest in going, send me an email and I'll put you in touch with other alumni who will be attending.

We are looking forward to bringing you all more news and updates on the teams' results, new recruits, and other fun info as the season gets underway. Please don't hesitate to let us know if there is anything specific you'd like to see in future newsletters.

Sam Wheeler

President

from the captains...

Greetings UCLA Sailing Team Alumni!

On behalf of the UCLA Sailing Team, we want to thank you once again for attending the alumni regatta. There was good breeze, a lot of boats on the water, and everyone got some good races off. Mark and I were very sorry not to be there, but due to unfortunate circumstances we were unable to attend. Both of us are looking forward to sailing with all of you at next year's alumni regatta, and hopefully sooner.

The 2008-09 season was a blast. During the fall season UCLA Co-ed Varsity placed top five in all South regattas and acquired three additional boats. Spring season, the Women's Varsity team doubled up to compete in the Co-ed division as well; we placed top five in all South Series regattas, fourth in our district, and qualified for Co-ed PCCs. The women's team also ranked fourth in Women's for PCCSC, and was sponsored to compete at University of South Florida (USF), where Kelly Kephart racked up bullets and top-threes. We also greatly improved our team racing capabilities and UCLA received their first invite to the Stanford McIntyre Team Race Regatta.

The team looks promising for the fast approaching fall season and beyond. Fourth year Mark Anders, who red-shirted in spring 2009, will resume as our A fleet Co-ed skipper, and Oscar Jasklowski, a third year, will take the helm for B fleet. Single-handed regattas are also expected to go over well for Mark and 6' 4" Oscar. Shannon Walker and Carmen will resume sailing Women's Varsity come January, when regattas are back in full swing. Mark, Oscar, and Carmen look forward to more team racing. We expect to place well at next year's McIntyre. Good things are also expected from our JV team, who have been practicing all summer, and from our freshmen recruits.

Some goals for next year include qualifying for semi-finals at Women's and Co-ed PCCs, training our JV team to prepare them for potential varsity sailing, purchasing new equipment, and expanding our FJ fleet. It is pertinent that we replace most of our sails, especially with the team growing as it is, and repair the hulls on some of our older boats. We also hope to travel to as many out of state regattas as funds allow. Such regattas include spring season's Rainbow in Hawaii, and the USF women's regatta in Florida. We always learn a lot from competing against those outside of our district.

As a club team competing against varsity-funded teams, we have always held our own. We are especially proud of the Women's team for doing so well in Co-ed regattas and at Women's PCCs last season. Each year we expect more from each other, and each year we sail faster than the last. The team is pleased to develop a rapport with the alumni, and we are all excited about the potential for the team with this new support base. Please don't hesitate to contact either of us if you're in town and feel like going for a sail!

We hope this summer has treated you all well,

Carmen Bozina & Mark Anders
UCLA Sailing Team Captains, 2009-2010
