Bruins and friends take home the hardware at the 2013 High Sierra Regatta. From left: Ryan Lorence (UCSD '07) and Danielle Ryan (UCLA '09), Anna Schoenbrunner (UCLA '11) and Ben Pedrick (Stanford '11), and Lyzz Schwegler (UCLA '07) and Sam Wheeler (UCLA '08).

Dear Friends,

After a not-entirely-intentional summer hiatus, we are back with an alumni-focused October newsletter. Read on for the latest on ordering jackets (Danielle’s taking over, so it’s actually happening), the 2013 Pacheco winners, this summer’s High Sierra Regatta, the fall racing schedule, and some personal updates regarding a few of our recent alumni.

The team has been busy with their summer recruiting efforts and getting ready for the Frosh/Soph regatta next weekend, so they’ve got plenty to update us on but have had their hands full lately – all the more so because, being college students, everyone was scattered for the summer. We’re hoping that the next issue will bring you a lot more about what is going on with them, but there is one update we can pass along right now: the team is in debt. This is not a dire situation – they have yet to collect fall dues, which are usually enough to cover operating expenses – but at this moment the team is about $100 in the red.

If you can, please consider making a donation to help put the team on more secure financial footing. You can find instructions for donating on the FOUST website here. As always, please send us an email if you decide to donate, so we can make sure your contribution finds its way to the right place.

August 2012 Newsletter

UCLA Sailing Team alumni at Huntington Lake for the 2012 High Sierra Regatta.

Dear Friends,

Summer is always a little slow for sailing team news, but never fear, we’ve put together a great issue for you anyway. Read on for profiles of the incoming officers on both the Team and FOUST, a recap of the 2012 High Sierra regatta, where UCLA alumni made a strong showing, and the Team’s race schedule for the fall.

One event to make sure you mark on your calendars is the new-this-year PCCSC Afterguard Regatta at San Diego Yacht Club on September 29 and 30 [dates corrected]. The event will be sailed in FJs and J/22s and is open to alumni of any PCCSC school. FOUST Secretary Danielle Ryan (’09) has volunteered to coordinate a UCLA team, so email FOUST if you want to be a part of it. Teams can also be mixed and matched combinations of alumni from different schools. FOUST Team Liaison Billy Edwards (’12) and recent grad Anna Schoenbrunner have offered to host people in San Diego.

We have also traditionally held an alumni tailgate at the Stoney Burke Regatta at Treasure Island. This year, that regatta takes place on October 13 and 14. The final regatta for the Treasure Island Vanguard 15 fleet is the same weekend in Tomales Bay, so ironically, a number of our Bay Area alumni who participate in that fleet would be unable to be at Treasure Island for the tailgate. Please email FOUST if you would like to do an alumni event at the regatta, and we’ll gauge interest and figure something out.

Dear Friends,

In this issue, the 2011-2012 season of the UCLA Sailing team wraps up, and we recap some of the end-of-the-year highlights and awards, check out the team’s summer activities, and send graduating senior Billy Edwards off with a fond farewell.

Following the momentous return of the sailing team time capsule to its southern home and the annual Sailing Team Banquet, the team rounded out the year with a successful 2012 Alumni Regatta.

The team wishes the best of luck to graduating senior Billy Edwards (and FOUST welcomes another alumnus to the ranks!). Billy joined the UCLA Sailing team in the fall of 2007, and his dedication to recruitment and team operations have left a memorable mark on all those fortunate enough to share years on the team with him. Heartfelt congratulations to Billy on a magnificent tenure on the sailing team–we wish him the best in graduate studies at UCSD and welcome him aboard the FOUST community, where he is stepping into the Team Liaison officer position. Last year we profiled the graduating seniors. This year, with only Billy graduating, we have a profile written by his former teammate Oscar Jasklowski (’11) included below.

FOUST Newsletter: December 2011

The 2007 women's team at Women's PCCs in Hawaii. Help out the current lady Bruins to compete this spring in Keehi Lagoon!

Dear Friends,

Happy holidays and happy new year from FOUST! I hope the season finds you all well.

November saw just one regatta for the team, with the Thanksgiving holiday interruption. PCCSC Fall Champs (otherwise known as North/South) was held in Santa Barbara harbor, with the team finishing a solid 8/21 overall.

As many of us all-too-painfully remember, running a club team is possibly the most difficult aspect of the sport (alright, some of those St. Francis regattas may take a close second). We’d like to introduce a few of the “my real major was sailing” members this year– the two Co-Captains, Billy Edwards and Emelia Pelliccio, team Treasurer Erica Parker, Safety Officer Judge Ryan, and Social Chair Amy Stuyvesant.

We’re also bringing you a highlight of alumnus Jed Olenick (written by recent grad Drew Morton). Jed has been very supportive of the team with his time (and, apparently, pizzas), and also incredibly generously bought the team their brand new trailer last year.

Lastly, no FOUST newsletter would be complete without letting you know what we need money for next! The team’s next fundraising goal is covering airfare for the ladies to go to Women’s PCCs in Hawai’i this coming spring.

FOUST Newsletter: July 2011

Alumni, current team members, parents, and friends at the 2011 UCLA Sailing Team Alumni Regatta.

Dear Friends,

It was great to see so many of you at our third annual alumni regatta on May 21. This newsletter includes a recap of the regatta, and profiles of the graduating class of 2011 (congrats guys!). This month’s featured alum is Kevin Richards (’00), and we also have a warm welcome to Alison Saarela, the newest addition to the FOUST community.

We held elections for FOUST officers at the regatta, and Lyzz Schwegler has taken over as President. Neha Bazaj (’10) and Emily Klopstein (’00) are sticking around for another year as Treasurer and Secretary, respectively. I’ve shifted to Vice President, and we’re happy to welcome Drew Morton (’11) as our new Team Liaison! Big thanks to Taryn Aguiar (’10) for liaising for the past year.
