August 2012 Newsletter

UCLA Sailing Team alumni at Huntington Lake for the 2012 High Sierra Regatta.

Dear Friends,

Summer is always a little slow for sailing team news, but never fear, we’ve put together a great issue for you anyway. Read on for profiles of the incoming officers on both the Team and FOUST, a recap of the 2012 High Sierra regatta, where UCLA alumni made a strong showing, and the Team’s race schedule for the fall.

One event to make sure you mark on your calendars is the new-this-year PCCSC Afterguard Regatta at San Diego Yacht Club on September 29 and 30 [dates corrected]. The event will be sailed in FJs and J/22s and is open to alumni of any PCCSC school. FOUST Secretary Danielle Ryan (’09) has volunteered to coordinate a UCLA team, so email FOUST if you want to be a part of it. Teams can also be mixed and matched combinations of alumni from different schools. FOUST Team Liaison Billy Edwards (’12) and recent grad Anna Schoenbrunner have offered to host people in San Diego.

We have also traditionally held an alumni tailgate at the Stoney Burke Regatta at Treasure Island. This year, that regatta takes place on October 13 and 14. The final regatta for the Treasure Island Vanguard 15 fleet is the same weekend in Tomales Bay, so ironically, a number of our Bay Area alumni who participate in that fleet would be unable to be at Treasure Island for the tailgate. Please email FOUST if you would like to do an alumni event at the regatta, and we’ll gauge interest and figure something out.

FOUST Newsletter: January 2012

Freshmen Peter Bailey and Zack Chin enjoying a Hawaii sunset at the PJ Wenner Memorial Rainbow Invitational Regatta. Help us get the women's team to Hawaii for PCCs!

Dear Friends,

Our first issue of 2012 includes results from Long Beach, Hawaii, and San Diego, and a profile of recent alum Heather Funkhouser (’09), who just completed a Pacific crossing, and the spring regatta schedule for the team. We’re also passing along a sailing opportunity with Tom Hartmann (’04) and the Newport Sea Base youth racing team on February 17-18.

We also have some news to share: Judge Ryan (’14), who last year won A Division at PCCs as a freshman (among other accomplishments), has transferred from UCLA to Brown this semester. While we at FOUST are sorry to see him go, we wish him the best with his new team, and hope that he survives those New England winters despite his SoCal roots.

If you can, please consider helping out with our current fundraising goal: helping the women’s team make it to Hawaii for PCCs this April. No one should have to pay out of pocket to get to a championship regatta, but the team traditionally has not had the funds to cover airfare. At approximately $400 per round trip ticket, the total cost to get a team of four there and back is $1600. We’re just getting started – so far the FOUST community has chipped in $100 – but I’m confident that we can come together, meet this goal, and get the girls to their championship.

April 2011 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

This is the first of what, going forward, will be a monthly newsletter. We’ve got information about the alumni regatta, a big thank you to the parents whose donations secured a new trailer for the team, not one but two season recaps, and a profile of FOUST member Bobby Gordon (’08), this month’s featured alum.

One result that everyone needs to see, even if you don’t read this whole email: UCLA won the South 5 regatta!! If we had the resources, we would be throwing parades and gladiatorial games for these guys. Since we don’t, we’ll just say congratulations.

Fall 2010 Newsletter

Hi everyone,

In this issue, we’ve got a new fundraising goal, an alumni barbeque (!!!) in the Bay Area, upcoming fall regattas, and profiles of the UCLA Sailing Team officers for 2010-2011.

We’d love to see everyone who can make it at the barbeque on October 3, hosted by a local alumnus. We also want to get as many alumni out to support the team at the Stoney Burke Regatta on October 16 and 17.

Hope you’ve all had a great summer with a lot of chances to get out on the water!
