Rounding at St. Francis

Leah Ford (’19) and crew Arjun Boddu (’18) lead a pack around a mark at St. Francis

The team recently logged two impressive sixth place finishes, first at the always challenging St. Francis regatta, and then this past weekend at Women’s Pacific Coast Championships in San Diego.

The Bruins best finishes in both regattas were in B Division, with Leah Ford (’19), Arjun Boddu (’18), and Kylie Sullivan (’17) taking 4th in B at St. Francis, and Laura Roudebush (’18) and Maddy Kuhn (’20) taking 2nd in B at Women’s PCCs.  Huge congratulations from all of us at FOUST!

FOUST Newsletter: February 2013

IN THIS ISSUE: Introduction / Big Announcements / Regatta Recaps / Coming Up Next

Emelia Pelliccio ('13) and Erica Parker ('14) debut UCLA's BRAND NEW FJ at South 3 in Newport.

Dear Friends,

We’ve been slacking lately at FOUST, but we’re back! With big news! See below for announcements about the Alumni Regatta (we have a date!), a NEW BOAT, and fundraising success. This issue includes regatta results for the first couple months of 2013 and a preview of what to look forward to for the rest of the spring, including the annual France trip.

Photo credit goes to Nora Brackbill (’13) for the action shots from South 3. We’re trying something new with this issue: you can click through most of the photos to higher resolution versions. This is something we want to keep working on in the coming months.

Low wind at Tomales Bay, where a number of UCLA alumni competed in the Vanguard 15 Fleet 53 championships. Kevin Richards ('00) and Neha Bazaj ('10) finished second of fifteen boats.

Dear Friends,

Another year of UCLA sailing has started, and the team has already competed in four regattas. We’ve got results for you below. They’ve also had a great start recruiting, with 25 new sailors showing up for the initial recruiting event and around 18 staying involved so far. The roster was starting to get a little low last year, but with only one graduate departing last spring and a good turnout this fall, the future of the team looks as bright as ever.

The team shifted to a new practice schedule this fall, getting on the water on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Considering the number of Monday practices that got cancelled when people were worn out from regatta weekends, I wish we had thought of that while I was there. Instead of sailing on Mondays, they’ve been holding chalk talks in Westwood to help get the new recruits up to speed. So far, these have been well attended by new and returning members alike.

In addition to regatta results, we’ve also got some updates on alumni sailing activities, including dinghy racing, distance sailing, and a pirate festival.

These newsletters often include a request for donations to the team. Right now, though, there are significantly greater needs. Please do what you can to help with the recovery from Hurricane Sandy, whether that’s donating money to the Red Cross, giving blood, or if you’re in the affected areas, volunteering. Don’t worry, we’ll get back to hitting you up for money for the team soon enough. For now, we hope that any members of the FOUST community who are on the east coast are staying safe.

Freshmen Peter Bailey and Zack Chin enjoying a Hawaii sunset at the PJ Wenner Memorial Rainbow Invitational Regatta. Help us get the women's team to Hawaii for PCCs!

Dear Friends,

Our first issue of 2012 includes results from Long Beach, Hawaii, and San Diego, and a profile of recent alum Heather Funkhouser (’09), who just completed a Pacific crossing, and the spring regatta schedule for the team. We’re also passing along a sailing opportunity with Tom Hartmann (’04) and the Newport Sea Base youth racing team on February 17-18.

We also have some news to share: Judge Ryan (’14), who last year won A Division at PCCs as a freshman (among other accomplishments), has transferred from UCLA to Brown this semester. While we at FOUST are sorry to see him go, we wish him the best with his new team, and hope that he survives those New England winters despite his SoCal roots.

If you can, please consider helping out with our current fundraising goal: helping the women’s team make it to Hawaii for PCCs this April. No one should have to pay out of pocket to get to a championship regatta, but the team traditionally has not had the funds to cover airfare. At approximately $400 per round trip ticket, the total cost to get a team of four there and back is $1600. We’re just getting started – so far the FOUST community has chipped in $100 – but I’m confident that we can come together, meet this goal, and get the girls to their championship.

FOUST Newsletter: November 2011

Team UCLA leading UC Irvine at Match Race PCCs out of St. Francis Yacht Club, with Transpac 52s Vesper and PowerPlay racing behind them.

Dear Friends,

Happy Halloween from FOUST!

October was a busy month for the UCLA Sailing Team, kicking off the season with two regattas in San Diego and three in the San Francisco area. Highlights include winning A Division at Stoney Burke, taking third at the SDYC Autumn Invitational Match Race Regatta, and snagging a bullet in the first B Division race at Women’s Fall Champs.

The biggest highlight, however, might have been the completion of our latest fundraising target, with Ed Feo (’74) making the final donation to push the team past the $7900 they needed. Thank you to everyone who chipped in!

Finally, the Stoney Burke regatta tailgate was a big success, with alumni ranging from 1991 to 2011 in attendance. A few alumni will also be showing up for North/South at Santa Barbara on November 12-13, so if you’re free that weekend come out and show your support at the last regatta of 2011!
