FOUST Newsletter: December 2011

The 2007 women's team at Women's PCCs in Hawaii. Help out the current lady Bruins to compete this spring in Keehi Lagoon!

Dear Friends,

Happy holidays and happy new year from FOUST! I hope the season finds you all well.

November saw just one regatta for the team, with the Thanksgiving holiday interruption. PCCSC Fall Champs (otherwise known as North/South) was held in Santa Barbara harbor, with the team finishing a solid 8/21 overall.

As many of us all-too-painfully remember, running a club team is possibly the most difficult aspect of the sport (alright, some of those St. Francis regattas may take a close second). We’d like to introduce a few of the “my real major was sailing” members this year– the two Co-Captains, Billy Edwards and Emelia Pelliccio, team Treasurer Erica Parker, Safety Officer Judge Ryan, and Social Chair Amy Stuyvesant.

We’re also bringing you a highlight of alumnus Jed Olenick (written by recent grad Drew Morton). Jed has been very supportive of the team with his time (and, apparently, pizzas), and also incredibly generously bought the team their brand new trailer last year.

Lastly, no FOUST newsletter would be complete without letting you know what we need money for next! The team’s next fundraising goal is covering airfare for the ladies to go to Women’s PCCs in Hawai’i this coming spring.

FOUST Newsletter: November 2011

Team UCLA leading UC Irvine at Match Race PCCs out of St. Francis Yacht Club, with Transpac 52s Vesper and PowerPlay racing behind them.

Dear Friends,

Happy Halloween from FOUST!

October was a busy month for the UCLA Sailing Team, kicking off the season with two regattas in San Diego and three in the San Francisco area. Highlights include winning A Division at Stoney Burke, taking third at the SDYC Autumn Invitational Match Race Regatta, and snagging a bullet in the first B Division race at Women’s Fall Champs.

The biggest highlight, however, might have been the completion of our latest fundraising target, with Ed Feo (’74) making the final donation to push the team past the $7900 they needed. Thank you to everyone who chipped in!

Finally, the Stoney Burke regatta tailgate was a big success, with alumni ranging from 1991 to 2011 in attendance. A few alumni will also be showing up for North/South at Santa Barbara on November 12-13, so if you’re free that weekend come out and show your support at the last regatta of 2011!

News update: Bruins going to Nationals!

Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

As some of you may know, UCLA had an excellent performance last weekend at coed PCCs in Long Beach.  The Bruins took third and qualified for Nationals!

Judge Ryan (’14) and Erica Parker (’14) finished first in A division, winning the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce Trophy.  The UCLA freshmen edged out Cal Maritime by one point.  This is most likely the first time UCLA has won A division at PCCs since the late 1970s.  (There are gaps in the district’s records – if you know of a more recent UCLA victory please let us know.)  Oscar Jasklowski (’11) and Carmen Bozina (’11) also had a solid regatta in B, including a first place finish in race 10.

April 2011 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

This is the first of what, going forward, will be a monthly newsletter. We’ve got information about the alumni regatta, a big thank you to the parents whose donations secured a new trailer for the team, not one but two season recaps, and a profile of FOUST member Bobby Gordon (’08), this month’s featured alum.

One result that everyone needs to see, even if you don’t read this whole email: UCLA won the South 5 regatta!! If we had the resources, we would be throwing parades and gladiatorial games for these guys. Since we don’t, we’ll just say congratulations.

The ladies' team at Bryson.

Stoney Burke Results!

For those of you who haven’t heard yet, the team had an amazing regatta this past weekend at Treasure Island.

The co-ed team finished in 2nd place overall in a fleet of 27, with Oscar Jasklowski and Carly Olenick coming in 2nd in A Division, and freshmen Judge Ryan and Erica Parker also placing 2nd in B.

The Bruins were only five points behind Hawaii for first place, and a full 21 points ahead of Santa Barbara, who came in third.
