Fundraising Opportunities: New Boat, New Sails

Hi all,

We’ve got some great news to share: this week, the team was awarded a $4000 grant from the club sports department to put towards a new boat.  The money was intended to be used for a single piece of equipment, and thanks to a great pitch by the captains the sailing team managed to beat out the other club sports in competition.

This money comes at a crucial time.  Due to limited funding, the team has not been able to purchase a new boat since 2006.  Major college sailing programs will rotate their entire fleet in that period.  UCLA’s top race boat has served the team well for five years, but at this point it is taking on water and puts the team at a competitive disadvantage.  A new boat will help to ensure that the Bruins can stay competitive next year and going forward.

In that context, the $4000 from the university is a very important show of support.  But it is not enough.   Continue reading

April 2011 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

This is the first of what, going forward, will be a monthly newsletter. We’ve got information about the alumni regatta, a big thank you to the parents whose donations secured a new trailer for the team, not one but two season recaps, and a profile of FOUST member Bobby Gordon (’08), this month’s featured alum.

One result that everyone needs to see, even if you don’t read this whole email: UCLA won the South 5 regatta!! If we had the resources, we would be throwing parades and gladiatorial games for these guys. Since we don’t, we’ll just say congratulations.

St. Francis Regatta

Hi everyone,

I’m sorry that you haven’t been hearing much from us lately.  Starting Monday, we will be providing a monthly newsletter to keep you up to date about the team and FOUST.

I wanted to write before that came out, though, to alert our Bay Area members to the St. Francis regatta that is taking place this weekend.  This is always one of the biggest regattas of the year and usually includes high wind that makes for exciting spectating. I’ll be helping with race committee, several other alumni will be in attendance, and of course the team will be there to compete.

Fall 2010 Newsletter

Hi everyone,

In this issue, we’ve got a new fundraising goal, an alumni barbeque (!!!) in the Bay Area, upcoming fall regattas, and profiles of the UCLA Sailing Team officers for 2010-2011.

We’d love to see everyone who can make it at the barbeque on October 3, hosted by a local alumnus. We also want to get as many alumni out to support the team at the Stoney Burke Regatta on October 16 and 17.

Hope you’ve all had a great summer with a lot of chances to get out on the water!

Post-Regatta Update

Thanks to everyone who came out for the second annual alumni regatta!  If you missed it, be sure you come next year – great sailing, great food, and great people.

Congratulations to Mark Anders, Merel Witteveen, and Ben Schwegler on winning the team racing portion of the day with a record of 3-1, and to Garrett Woodworth on having the best average finish in the fleet racing at 1.5.  Full results are attached as an Excel file, along with the group photo.
