Dear Friends,

Our first issue of 2012 includes results from Long Beach, Hawaii, and San Diego, and a profile of recent alum Heather Funkhouser (’09), who just completed a Pacific crossing, and the spring regatta schedule for the team. We’re also passing along a sailing opportunity with Tom Hartmann (’04) and the Newport Sea Base youth racing team on February 17-18.

We also have some news to share: Judge Ryan (’14), who last year won A Division at PCCs as a freshman (among other accomplishments), has transferred from UCLA to Brown this semester. While we at FOUST are sorry to see him go, we wish him the best with his new team, and hope that he survives those New England winters despite his SoCal roots.

If you can, please consider helping out with our current fundraising goal: helping the women’s team make it to Hawaii for PCCs this April. No one should have to pay out of pocket to get to a championship regatta, but the team traditionally has not had the funds to cover airfare. At approximately $400 per round trip ticket, the total cost to get a team of four there and back is $1600. We’re just getting started – so far the FOUST community has chipped in $100 – but I’m confident that we can come together, meet this goal, and get the girls to their championship.

Happy holidays and happy new year from FOUST! I hope the season finds you all well.

November saw just one regatta for the team, with the Thanksgiving holiday interruption. PCCSC Fall Champs (otherwise known as North/South) was held in Santa Barbara harbor, with the team finishing a solid 8/21 overall.

As many of us all-too-painfully remember, running a club team is possibly the most difficult aspect of the sport (alright, some of those St. Francis regattas may take a close second). We’d like to introduce a few of the “my real major was sailing” members this year– the two Co-Captains, Billy Edwards and Emelia Pelliccio, team Treasurer Erica Parker, Safety Officer Judge Ryan, and Social Chair Amy Stuyvesant.

We’re also bringing you a highlight of alumnus Jed Olenick (written by recent grad Drew Morton). Jed has been very supportive of the team with his time (and, apparently, pizzas), and also incredibly generously bought the team their brand new trailer last year.

Lastly, no FOUST newsletter would be complete without letting you know what we need money for next! The team’s next fundraising goal is covering airfare for the ladies to go to Women’s PCCs in Hawai’i this coming spring.

Happy Halloween from FOUST!

October was a busy month for the UCLA Sailing Team, kicking off the season with two regattas in San Diego and three in the San Francisco area. Highlights include winning A Division at Stoney Burke, taking third at the SDYC Autumn Invitational Match Race Regatta, and snagging a bullet in the first B Division race at Women’s Fall Champs.

The biggest highlight, however, might have been the completion of our latest fundraising target, with Ed Feo (’74) making the final donation to push the team past the $7900 they needed. Thank you to everyone who chipped in!

Finally, the Stoney Burke regatta tailgate was a big success, with alumni ranging from 1991 to 2011 in attendance. A few alumni will also be showing up for North/South at Santa Barbara on November 12-13, so if you’re free that weekend come out and show your support at the last regatta of 2011!

Another short newsletter this month, but get excited for racing to start next month. UCLA will kick off the college sailing season at Frosh/Soph, a regatta for first and second year sailors on Mission Bay on October 8-9. The full team will compete at Stoney Burke at Treasure Island on October 15-16, where we’re hoping for strong alumni turnout, and the women will hopefully be sailing Women’s Fall Champs at Stanford the following weekend. This issue includes a letter from the captains, the status of fundraising for a new boat, and information about the upcoming tailgate for alumni and other friends of the team at the Stoney Burke regatta.

Dear Friends,

We’ve got a short newsletter for you this month as we gear up for the fall season. This edition includes the fall schedule and FOUST officer bios. If you’re in the Bay Area or willing to make the trip, go ahead and mark your calendars for the Stoney Burke regatta on October 15-16 at Treasure Island, where we’ll have an alumni tailgate. Starting next month we should have the first regatta reports in, as well as bios of the new officers on the team.

We at FOUST would like to congratulate last year’s winners of the team’s Pacheco awards, given every year to outstanding team members based on a vote of the team. The 2011 winners were:

Alumni, current team members, parents, and friends at the 2011 UCLA Sailing Team Alumni Regatta.

It was great to see so many of you at our third annual alumni regatta on May 21. This newsletter includes a recap of the regatta, and profiles of the graduating class of 2011 (congrats guys!). This month’s featured alum is Kevin Richards (’00), and we also have a warm welcome to Alison Saarela, the newest addition to the FOUST community.

We held elections for FOUST officers at the regatta, and Lyzz Schwegler has taken over as President. Neha Bazaj (’10) and Emily Klopstein (’00) are sticking around for another year as Treasurer and Secretary, respectively. I’ve shifted to Vice President, and we’re happy to welcome Drew Morton (’11) as our new Team Liaison! Big thanks to Taryn Aguiar (’10) for liaising for the past year.

Cell phones - or mind powers?

1- Report time is 10:00.  We need to be finished and cleared out by 5:00 because of another event at the MAC, so please try to be on time if you can.

2- Parking is limited at the MAC.  We ask that everyone park in the Dock 52 lot on Fiji, and we will shuttle people from there to the MAC.  Feel free to drive down to the MAC if you have people or things to unload though, just be prepared to take your car back to Dock 52.  The MAC has been very supportive of us holding this regatta, and we want to do whatever we can to minimize the impact on them.  If you go straight to Dock 52 and need a ride, please call Sam at (202) 525-6734.

3- The Schweglers are very kindly hosting dinner for everyone after the regatta.  Their address is 4153 Cedar Ave, Long Beach, 90807 (map).

4- Scott Barber (’11) and his family have offered to take us out on their J-105 on Sunday.  Please talk to Sam or Scott tomorrow if you are interested.  Details will be finalized tomorrow, but we are planning to leave the dock around noon.

We’ve got some great news to share: this week, the team was awarded a $4000 grant from the club sports department to put towards a new boat.  The money was intended to be used for a single piece of equipment, and thanks to a great pitch by the captains the sailing team managed to beat out the other club sports in competition.

This money comes at a crucial time.  Due to limited funding, the team has not been able to purchase a new boat since 2006.  Major college sailing programs will rotate their entire fleet in that period.  UCLA’s top race boat has served the team well for five years, but at this point it is taking on water and puts the team at a competitive disadvantage.  A new boat will help to ensure that the Bruins can stay competitive next year and going forward.

In that context, the $4000 from the university is a very important show of support.  But it is not enough.  Taking into account a discount for college teams, a new FJ costs approximately $7250.  Starting at the alumni regatta next weekend, we hope that the alumni, parents, and other friends of the team can come together to close that last gap.  Please help if you can – all donations to the UCLA Sailing Team are tax deductible.

Another opportunity has also recently emerged if you would like to make a difference right now: the Stanford team is selling several sets of gently used sails for the steal price of $150 each.  We intend to buy six sets in time for the alumni regatta next weekend, and team parents have already committed to cover a few of them.  If you would like to donate a set or two, please contact us by email.

Lyzz and I will pick up the sails that the team is able to purchase from Stanford this week and bring them down to Marina del Rey for the alumni regatta.
