introduction...

Dear Friends,

Another short newsletter this month, but get excited for racing to start next month. UCLA will kick off the college sailing season at Frosh/Soph, a regatta for first and second year sailors on Mission Bay on October 8-9. The full team will compete at Stoney Burke at Treasure Island on October 15-16, where we're hoping for strong alumni turnout, and the women will hopefully be sailing Women's Fall Champs at Stanford the following weekend. The complete fall schedule is available on the PCCSC website.

This issue includes a letter from the captains, the status of fundraising for a new boat, and information about the upcoming tailgate for alumni and other friends of the team at the Stoney Burke regatta.

If you haven't had a chance tojoin FOUST or pay your 2011 dues you can do that on our website. We would also like to encourage our members to donate to the team if you are able.

Hope to see you all at Treasure Island,

Sam Wheeler

from the captains...

Hello alumni and friends!

We are very excited to kick off the 2011-2012 sailing season. We hope that this year will bring even more excitement than the last. The first thing on our agenda has been recruitment, and although we have not yet finished the recruitment process, you will be pleased to know that we have already been in contact with not one, but two talented freshmen. Peter Bailey and Jordan Martucci each raced on their high school sailing teams and are enthusiastic about getting involved with the team as quickly as possible.

We are also very excited to announce that this is the first year in quite some time that the team will be competing in match racing! Judge Ryan, Erica Parker, Emelia Pelliccio, and Billy Edwards will be heading down to San Diego to compete in the SDYC Autumn Invitational Match Race on J22's this weekend. We hope this regatta will provide valuable experience that the team can take advantage of at this years PCCSC Match Racing Championships on Oct. 29th and 30th. Our first official regatta, however, will be Frosh/Soph hosted by UCSD in Mission Bay on Oct. 8th and 9th. We will be working hard in the weeks to come to prepare our new recruits and returning members for the competitive season.

With a new trailer, some new faces, and a new boat in the works, we are hoping for yet another amazing season!

Thank you for your continued support,

Billy Edwards

new boat fundraising...

The team is currently less than $1500 away from getting a brand new FJ. To date, they've received a $4000 grant from UCLA and approximately $1500 in generous donations from parents and alumni. Adding $1000 set aside from last year's budget, the boat-buying funds stand at about $6500. A new FJ, with tax, is about $7900.

Breakdown of funds raised and still needed for a new boat.

If the FOUST community comes together, we can bridge this gap and make this boat a reality. It has been six years since the last time the team was able to add a new boat. Ideally, a team would be able to turn over the whole fleet in that period. That may be wishful thinking - the oldest FJ in the UCLA fleet dates to 1983, significantly older than any of the current sailors - but one new boat is within reach. Please help if you can.

You can make a tax deductible donation to the sailing team online through the UCLA Recreation website here. Choose "UCLA Sailing CLub" from the first drop down menu (yes, we need to have that fixed). Please also check if your employer will match your gift. If you do make a gift online, or if you would like to donate by check, please contact us so that we can be sure your donation gets through to the team. Thank you very much for your support of the team.

stoney burke tailgate...

Last year we thought it would be nice to complement the annual spring alumni regatta with a fall event in the Bay Area. Keeping up what might now be a tradition, we would love to see the FOUST community turn out on Saturday, October 15 for the first varsity regatta of the year, Stoney Burke at Treasure Island.

Meet the team, catch up with friends, parents, and alumni, and watch the best college sailors on the west coast in action. FOUST will provide food from the grill. Feel free to bring any other snacks or beverages you might want. This will also be the weekend of the Treasure Island Music Festival so if you're planning to go to that, stop by the regatta first!

Please RSVP on facebook or send us an email if you're planning on coming out the tailgate.
