introduction...

Dear Friends,

Happy Halloween from FOUST!

October was a busy month for the UCLA Sailing Team, kicking off the season with two regattas in San Diego and three in the San Francisco area. Highlights include winning A Division at Stoney Burke, taking third at the SDYC Autumn Invitational Match Race Regatta, and snagging a bullet in the first B Division race at Women's Fall Champs.

The biggest highlight, however, might have been the completion of our latest fundraising target, with Ed Feo ('74) making the final donation to push the team past the $7900 they needed. Thank you to everyone who chipped in!

Finally, the Stoney Burke regatta tailgate was a big success, with alumni ranging from 1991 to 2011 in attendance. A few alumni will also be showing up for North/South at Santa Barbara on November 12-13, so if you're free that weekend come out and show your support at the last regatta of 2011!

Stay tuned next month for North/South results, the long awaited team officer bios, and a new featured alumni profile.

new boat...

Five months to the day after we first posted about this goal, FOUST and the sailing team met our fundraising target for a new boat! Ed Feo ('74) made the final donation to take this past the goalposts, but we would also like to thank Craig Brown ('65), Tom Hartmann ('04), Boris Gutman ('06), Deborah Wheeler, and everyone else who helped to make this a reality.

The team plans to place the order this week, and hopefully we'll see that shiny new FJ at some regattas this spring. The last time UCLA added a new boat to the fleet was 2005, so this is long overdue, and should make a huge difference in the vast majority of California regattas that require each team to bring their own boat.

While this goal has been met, there is still plenty of work to do to get this team to the next level. The existing fleet needs repairs, the team currently does not have funds to pay a coach's salary, and travel costs continue to account for the majority of the team's expenses. If you can, please consider making a donation to support the team in these efforts.

For now though, on behalf of FOUST and the team, thank you to everyone who helped out with the new boat!

regatta results...

The fall season started off with Judge Ryan ('14), Erica Parker ('14), Billy Edwards ('12), and Emelia Pelliccio ('13) heading to San Diego to compete in the SDYC Autumn Invitational Match Race Regatta. This regatta gave the Bruins a chance to hone their match racing skills and practice in J/22's before Match Race PCCs at the end of the month. UCLA finished third at SDYC, in a regatta that included many of their fellow collegiate competitors.

In a change from years past, the first official regatta for the team this year was Frosh/Soph in San Diego. Respecting the spirit of this even as an opportunity for newer sailors, sophomore Varsity A sailors Judge and Erica sat this one out, opening up space for Peter Bailey ('15) and Jesse Orrall ('14) in A Division, and Tim Pilegard ('14), Claire Cutler ('15), Zach Chin ('15), and Elizabeth Ficara ('15) in B. The Bruin underclassmen took 13th overall out of 19 teams competing.

The following weekend brought the full team up to Treasure Island for Stoney Burke. UCLA started strong with six straight top-six finishes in the Varsity fleet, but an over-early penalty and shifty conditions knocked them back to eighth of 24 in the final results. Nevertheless Judge Ryan ('14) and Amy Stuyvesant ('13) came away with an impressive first place in A Division (not reflected in the online scores due to an error that switched A and B results in the last race), and team captain Billy Edwards ('12), skippering his first Varsity regatta, took ninth in B Division with Carly Olenick ('13). The JV team, led by Emelia Pelliccio ('13) and Peter Bailey ('15) skippering, finished sixth out of 19 teams. Thanks to all the alumni who came out to show their support!

The Women's team came back to the Bay for a second consecutive weekend for Women's Fall Champs at Stanford, where the girls took fifth in the district. Highlights included a bullet for Erica and Amy in the first B Division race, and a second place finish for Emelia and Carly in A Division race 2. Full results are available here.

Finally, the team was back up North one more time for Match Race PCCs, hosted by Cal Maritime and St. Francis Yacht Club. This was the first time UCLA has competed in this event in recent memory, and the team's excitement was only slightly tempered by the discovery two weeks before the regatta that their four person crew had to lose over thirty pounds to meet an amended weight limit. The Bruins weighed in with a few pounds to spare and came out strong, leading Stanford for most of their first race. Unfortunately, Stanford went on to win the race and the regatta, while UCLA finished a respectable fourth in the district. A decisive win over USC means the fans can count this regatta as a victory. Although a late start on Saturday kept the competitors sailing until after dark, alumni Anna Schoenbrunner ('11) and Danny Wudka ('10) provided a very welcome dinner for the no-longer-calorie-restricted UCLA sailors. Results for this regatta are here.

stoney burke tailgate...

Thank you to everyone who came out for FOUST's second annual alumni tailgate! We had nine alumni present, and Pete Sandhu ('91) even brought his family along. A scheduling conflict with the local Vanguard 15 fleet's championship regatta kept couple people away, but overall this was a good turnout from our Bay Area members. FOUST kept the grill going for spectators and competitors, and we all had a chance to meet some of the new sailors on the team.

Recent grad Oscar Jasklowski ('11) couldn't make this one but is hoping to round up some alumni for North/South in Santa Barbara on November 12-13. If you're interested in coming out for that, contact FOUST and we'll put everyone in touch.
