introduction...

Dear Friends,

In this issue, the 2011-2012 season of the UCLA Sailing team wraps up, and we recap some of the end-of-the-year highlights and awards, check out the team's summer activities, and send graduating senior Billy Edwards off with a fond farewell.

Following the momentous return of the sailing team time capsule to its southern home and the annual Sailing Team Banquet, the team rounded out the year with a successful 2012 Alumni Regatta.

The team wishes the best of luck to graduating senior Billy Edwards (and FOUST welcomes another alumnus to the ranks!). Billy joined the UCLA Sailing team in the fall of 2007, and his dedication to recruitment and team operations have left a memorable mark on all those fortunate enough to share years on the team with him. Heartfelt congratulations to Billy on a magnificent tenure on the sailing team--we wish him the best in graduate studies at UCSD and welcome him aboard the FOUST community, where he is stepping into the Team Liaison officer position. Last year we profiled the graduating seniors. This year, with only Billy graduating, we have a profile written by his former teammate Oscar Jasklowski ('11) included below.

This summer, the team members remaining Los Angeles will be representing the team during the off-season with participation in the Marina Aquatic Center's Friday Night Race Series. In an attempt to round up all of the MAC's trophies (from cups to T shirts) skipper Emilia Pelliccio ('13) and crew Carly Olenick ('13) took 1st Place in the June 15 edition. Louise Lehman ('14) will be teaching sailing this summer at the MAC, and Nora Brackbill ('13) and Emilia also remain in the area. Going forward, FOUST would like to extend the invitation to any traveling team member or alumni to reach out, in the hopes that we can put current team members in touch with local alumni and forge new sailing and networking opportunities.

The team will also receive a new boat this fall, and we look forward to the christening. (Thanks again to Ed Feo ('74) and others for generous donations!) The annual UCLA Sailing Team jacket order has been postponed until the Gill Softshells are back in stock, and the order will be placed at the beginning of fall quarter. That means that current alumni have all summer to order a jacket, if desired, so please email FOUST if you would like to place an order. In the meantime, we may try to place an alumni-only order of Gill Crew Jackets. Contact FOUST right away if you would like one of those.

Congratulations to the 2011-2012 UCLA Sailing Team to a job well done, and a special farewell to graduating senior Billy Edwards after five magnificent years with the team. Great job all, and we can't wait to meet the recruitment class of Fall 2012!

graduating senior: billy edwards...

In his five years at UCLA, Billy Edwards ('12) unquestionably left his mark on the team, rising from a JV crew to Varsity A Division skipper. Billy served as captain for two years and took UCLA to numerous championship events as well as the Course Crosiere EDHEC keelboat regatta in France. Former teammate Oscar Jasklowski ('11), echoing his similarly offbeat profile of Drew Morton ('11) last year, authored the following tribute to this year's only graduating senior.

This recently graduated super-senior knows all about bears. Anytime someone has a bear question, Bill should be the first to be consulted. Black bears grizzly bears polar bears spectacled bears sand bears Tibetan blue bears (this is a real thing, just ask Bill!), whatever the bear, Bill will know about it. This encyclopedic bear knowledge is really just a small subset of Bill's vast knowledge of the outdoors. Between his time spent at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico to his time hiking 300+ miles of the John Muir trail in the Sierras to his time guiding fishing trips at Bruin Woods, Bill has amassed some interesting and useful tidbits about the outdoors. Interestingly enough, Bill refuses to eat fish. For a long time it seemed like Bill refused to eat anything with a shadow, but it seems like he's eating more these days.

After spending some quality time with his family and dawg at his home in Fullerton this summer, in the fall Bill will be taking the plunge into a mechanical engineering doctorate program at UCSD. This is a very highly ranked program. My understanding is that Bill is interested in developing robots and autonomous vehicles. This could, however, be completely wrong. Should this be the case, you will see a corrigendum in the next FOUST newsletter.

I suppose that it is also important to note that during his time at UCLA, Bill was a varsity skipper, two time representative of UCLA at the EDHEC regatta in France, and two time team captain. He also represented UCLA at match racing, team racing, and coed PCCs (the Triple Crown, if you will). The only thing that prevented him from obtaining the Quadruple Crown was that he is not a woman.

pacheco awards...

Each year, the team bestows the prestigious Pacheco Awards, named for the father of a recent graduate who donated trophies, on outstanding sailors. Recipients are selected by a vote of their teammates. A big congratulations to this year's sailors joining the ranks of Pacheco award recipients:

Most Improved - Emelia Pelliccio ('13)
Most Dedicated - Louise Lehman ('14)
Rookie of the Year - Zack Chin ('15)
MVP - Erica Parker ('14) and Peter Bailey ('15) (Tie)

alumni regatta recap...

Carmen Bozina ('11), Danielle Ryan ('09), Kelly Kephart ('09), and Morgan Glier ('11) at the Alumni Regatta.

The 4th annual UCLA Sailing Team Alumni Regatta took place on May 27 in perfect conditions at Marina del Rey: sun shining, temperature in the mid 70s, and breeze around 8-12 kts. About 35 alumni, current team members, and other friends of the team turned out. (Thanks to Kevin Richards ('00) for representing the pre-2006 crowd -- we hope to see the rest of you next year!)

As in past years, the day started with fleet racing, using average scores to avoid the need for each competitor to sail the same number of races. Carmen Bozina ('11) won this portion of the day handily with an average of 1.75, followed by Sam Wheeler ('08) with 2.3, Kevin Richards with 2.5, and Mark Anders ('11) and Garrett Woodworth (UH '99) tied for fourth with 3.5. Most skippers sailed with multiple crews.

Erica Parker ('14) and Garrett Woodworth (UH '99) jibe during team racing, while Tim Pilegard ('14), Billy Edwards ('12), Christina Kim ('09), and Sam Wheeler ('08) continue on a wing.

After a break for lunch, sailors divided into teams based on their fleet race scores for afternoon team racing. Garrett Woodworth, Oscar Jasklowski ('11), and Billy Edwards ('12) took first place of four teams, with Christina Kim ('09), Erica Parker ('14), Louise Lehman ('14), Neha Bazaj ('10), and Tim Pilegard ('14) crewing. Sam Wheeler, Kelly Kephart ('09), and Scott Ford Barber ('11) came in second, with crews Christina Kim, Morgan Glier ('11), and Louise Lehman.

We also held our annual FOUST meeting at the regatta, electing the following officers for the coming year: Sam Wheeler as President, Lyzz Schwegler ('07) as Vice President, Neha Bazaj returning as Treasurer, Danielle Ryan ('09) as Secretary, and new graduate Billy Edwards as Team Liaison. Following racing, the Schweglers kindly hosted the competitors for a barbecue and other festivities in Long Beach. FOUST extends a giant thank you to the Schweglers for again opening their beautiful home to the UCLA community!

We would also like to thank Mark Anders, Eric Dita, and Tatsuma Woo-Kawaguchi (all '11) for hosting the first-ever time capsule party the night before the regatta. The team's traveling time capsule arrived in Los Angeles this year, prompting a call for alumni to return to Westwood, relive the glory days, and peruse the contents that had accumulated over the years in our makeshift treasure chest (aka Sobe bottle). A good time was had by all, including attendees from the class of 2006 through the class of 2015. The time capsule will now begin a journey North, with Bay Area alumni hosting a party when it eventually reaches San Francisco.

Finally, many thanks to the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center for hosting us again, and to the current team for their efforts in putting on another memorable regatta!
